The Beating of Derryl Jenkins

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Derryl Jenkins, 43,  was cruising about 15 mph over the speed limit last February in North Minneapolis where he was pulled over by a single officer, Richard Walker.

Walker’s squad car was equipped with a dashboard camera which captured the brutality and violence that followed.

As seen on the video, Jenkins and Walker become involved in a scuffle.

Going simply by what the raw video shows, Jenkins simply stepped out of his car and it was Walker that made the initial attack and was clearly the aggressor from the beginning of the incident.

Although Jenkins had plenty of opportunity to resist and fight back, he seems more interested in defending himself from the irrational attack by the pig oppressor.

Walker is seen calling for backup (2:30) before he effectively subdues Jenkins by bringing him to the ground and sitting atop him while awaiting the responding pigs.

While Walker might have been acting like a total asshole, he was mostly acting to restrain Jenkins, the half dozen pigs that responded to his distress call reacted with the violence that the oppressive institution known as the Minneapolis Police regularly dish out to our citizens.

Transcripts obtained by Jenkins lawyer, Paul Edlund, showed that one of the responding pigs called this “a good fight”  ….

North Star Republic will attempt to find names and photos of these officers so we can expose them as enforcers of class oppression and brutal enemies of the people.

If you have any information concerning this incident or similar stories of police brutality, coercion,  or wanton violence  we want to hear from you.

Press Release for Sept 25th G-20 March

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Thousands to March to the G20 Summit to Bring the Peoples’ Demands:

Money for Human Needs, Not for Wars and Occupations – Environmental Justice for the Earth and its Inhabitant – Jobs and Health Care for All

WHAT: Permitted rally and “Peoples’ March” to G20 Summit

WHO: Thomas Merton Center Antiwar Committee and 40+ endorsing groups

WHEN: Friday, September 25, 2009, 12:00pm - 5pm (opening rally starts at 12:00pm)

WHERE: The plans for Friday are:

· 12:00 pm – Opening Rally at the corner of Fifth and Craft Avenues in Oakland.

· 2:00pm – Protestors will march down Fifth Avenue to the City County Building Downtown for a speak-out.

· 3:00pm – They will march down Grant St. to the Federal Building for another speak-out.

· 3:30pm – They will march down 10th St. to a block from the G20 and then conclude the march.

At least three feeder marches are being organized to join the march along the route.

Angry at the lack of opportunity for public input at the upcoming G20 Summit and the escalating global economic and environmental crises, the Thomas Merton Center and its Antiwar Committee are organizing a permitted march to make sure the peoples’ demands are heard. “Anyone who has lost a job, a home, a loved one to war, lost value to a retirement plan, gotten sick from environmental pollution, or lived without adequate healthcare, water, or food has been directly affected by policies set by the G20 and should join us on Sept. 25th,” said Jessica Banner of the Antiwar Committee. Thousands of people from around the nation are expected to participate in the Peoples’ March.

“We have the right to be seen, heard, and considered,” said Pete Shell of the Antiwar Committee. Although the Merton Center applied for a permit, the City has responded by saying that they can’t guarantee the group’s right to march because the Secret Service will be taking over the event. “We call on the city to defend our right to march to a block from the convention center on Friday, and to use Point State Park for the week of the summit. We want the world to see that Pittsburgh is a place where democracy is practiced and the right to assemble and dissent is allowed.”

Dr. Regina Birchem, a resident of Irwin, PA and former President of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), notes that, “Though the G20 documents from past meetings have acknowledged the inequalities and the many who suffer and die of starvation, the world leaders’ policies of exploitation and exclusion continue. The agenda of accumulation of resources and wealth is protected with enormous military expenditures and increasingly sophisticated surveillance technologies.” WILPF – U.S. Section is an endorser of the march.

Many march organizers are motivated by their opposition to the economic and military policies that continue to protect large profits instead of affording people their basic needs and rights. “The Democrats have sold us out, again. The only thing Obama’s kept his promise on is expanding the losing war in Afghanistan,” said Albert Petrarca of Pittsburgh. “We need to re-build the mass movements and it starts with the G20 in Pittsburgh,” he continued. The Antiwar Committee invites all people of Pittsburgh and beyond to nonviolently bring its demands to the summit by joining the Peoples’ March on September 25.

RNC8 Charges Dropped

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Great news, activists!

Less than 2 weeks after receiving a strongly-worded condemnation from the Duluth Central Labor Body, Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner dropped all terrorism-related charges against the RNC8 (press release below).

Thanks to everyone who donated cash, educated their unions, signed petitions… solidarity from the north country helped make this possible. But it’s only a partial victory - the 8 are still facing serious and unfounded conspiracy charges and years in prison. To find out how you can help, visit rnc

GAERTNER DROPS TERRORISM ENHANCEMENTS, CONTINUES CRIMINALIZATION OF DISSENT

RNC 8, FRIENDS OF THE RNC 8 SPEAK ABOUT POLITICAL MANEUVERING

April 9, 2009 Contact: Celia Kutz, press@…, 612-886-4565

In the surest sign yet of the power of post-RNC court solidarity, Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner has dropped two of four unfounded charges against the RNC 8. Caving to months and months of public pressure, Gaertner dropped one count of Conspiracy to Commit Riot in Furtherance of Terrorism, and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Criminal Damage to Property in Furtherance of Terrorism.

“We are heartened by the fact that our supporters have won this concession,” said defendant Nathanael Secor. “It’s taken a tremendous show of strength and solidarity over the past seven months.”

Originally facing a single charge–Conspiracy to Riot in Furtherance of Terrorism–Gaertner’s office added three additional charges against the eight defendants in December of last year. Now, two of those charges have been dropped, clearly demonstrating that all the charges are a matter of political maneuvering, not a reasoned look at the evidence.

On March 28, supporters delivered to Susan Gaertner’s office a stack of over 3,000 petitions urging her to drop all four charges. Among other statements, a resolution from the 17,000-member Duluth Central Labor Body in support of the RNC 8 was also delivered. National media attention, including an appearance on MSNBC on Wednesday morning, has drawn significant attention to the case at the same time as Gaertner is accelerating her campaign for Governor–having just hired full-time staffers, opened an office on University Avenue, and planned appearances at several DFL events in the next month. Additionally, the broad-based RNC 8 Defense Committee has succeeded in calling widespread attention to the Minnesota PATRIOT Act, and played an instrumental role in applying the pressure that led to this reduction of charges.

In removing the controversial MN PATRIOT Act from the debate at this moment, Susan Gaertner obviously hopes to defray the costs of this unprecedented prosecution on her campaign for Governor, and to mitigate the overwhelmingly negative public opinion of Ramsey County’s repressive behavior during and since the RNC.

“Make no mistake,” said defendant Luce Guillen-Givins, “This change to the complaint against us is a token gesture meant to placate our supporters and bolster a floundering political prosecution.”

As defendant Eryn Trimmer pointed out, “This move only focuses attention more acutely on the outrageous nature of the two remaining charges, Conspiracy to Commit Riot and Conspiracy to Commit Criminal Damage to Property.”

In the months leading up to the RNC, the defendants were involved in open, public organizing with a broad coalition of Twin Cities activists and community members. We continue to assert that the only “conspiracy” committed by the RNC 8 was to provide basic and necessary infrastructure for people who wished to engage in their fundamental right to dissent.

“We’re relieved and gratified that the most sensational part of the charges has been dropped,” said St. Paul peace and justice activist Betsy Raasch-Gilman, member of Friends of the RNC 8. She continued, “We hope that the conspiracy charges will also be dropped. If planning a protest can be called conspiracy, the right to free speech is in real danger.”

Friends of the RNC 8 asks Susan Gaertner to continue in the direction of justice by dropping all the remaining charges, thereby saving enormous financial resources for the people of Minnesota in this time of rampant foreclosures, unemployment and economic turmoil. We also remind supporters that while we should rightly celebrate this small victory, the time for increased action to defend the RNC 8 is now. Political organizing is not conspiracy. Dissent is not a crime.

SAY NO to the foreclosed home auction! Moratorium NOW on foreclosures & evictions!
Saturday, March 28 @ 12:00 Noon @ Minneapolis Convention Center, 1301 Second Avenue So, Minneapolis

On Saturday, March 28, the Real Estate Disposition Corporation (REDC), one of the biggest private auctioneers of foreclosed homes in the country, is auctioning more than 300 foreclosed homes at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The houses being sold to the highest bidder are the homes of families who were forced out by banks and mortgage companies. Many of these banks have received hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer bail-out money while throwing working people out of their homes. Thousands of people are being evicted from their homes every day. Hundreds of thousands of workers are being laid off each month. We cannot and must not be indifferent to the ugly spectacle of the auctioning of the homes of displaced families. In midst of the biggest economic crisis since the depression of the 1930s, these auctions should not be taking place. Working people and low-income people should not be paying for the crisis brought on by the greed of the banks and corporations. These foreclosed home auctions are a symptom of the cruel and criminal economy that ignores working people and low-income people while protecting corporations. Foreclosures will continue to grow until people unite and say No More!
Come to the Saturday, March 28th picket to speak out against the mounting foreclosure crisis and to demand that the government take concrete steps to stop people from losing their homes. Initiated by the Minnesota Coalition for a People’s Bail Out: 612-822-8020 or The People’s Bailout

Demand a People’s Bailout! Protest on Tax Day!
Wednesday, April 15th @ noon @ State Capitol, St. Paul

Protest on Tax Day for a People’s Bailout. Organized by the Coalition for a People’s Bailout .

Don’t Enlist! Resist! A day of actions to stop recruitment
Thursday, April 23rd

President Obama has failed to keep his promise of ending the war in Iraq.  His plan to keep 50,000 troops in Iraq through 2011 will continue an unjustified military occupation for almost 3 more years. An escalation is planned for Afghanistan, where Obama just deployed 17,000 additional troops. Maintaining these wars and occupations requires military recruiters to entice young people with false promises. Recruiters, who already disproportionately target low income people, will use the economic crisis to intensify pressure on vulnerable youth. We have to shatter the illusion that the war is ending and that new soldiers won’t have to fight.
On April 23, 2009, different actions, using a diversity of tactics, will occur simultaneously at recruiting centers across Minnesota. All will have the shared goal of opposing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and preventing military recruiting that day. Join us, to help make this day a success.
Join a picket: Various groups will stand in front of different stations that day. Check here to find one of these actions, and join us!
Organize an action: Work with your friends, or a group at your school, your church or in your neighborhood. “Adopt” a recruiting center and plan an action there. Contact us to coordinate, and we’ll list your plans on this site.
Call in day: If you can’t take the day off, use your break to call a recruiter. Check here soon for a listing of numbers, and suggested talking points. If they’re talking to you, they’re not recruiting someone else!

Slap on Wrist for Cop Who Rammed Minivan Full of Kids

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

So here is the scenario, Sargent Carrie Rindal of the Minnesota Highway Patrol is flying down Interstate 94, blasting her rock music, when she notices a minivan switch lanes without using a turn signal. The officer proceeds to put on her sirens and the minivan promptly slows down looking for a safe spot to pull over. However this being Minnesota, a particularly icy and snow filled wonderland, the driver of the minivan was unable to find a safe spot to stop and proceeded at a sluggish pace to the nearest ramp. This apparently wasn’t good enough for Sargent Rindal, who proceeded to ram the minivan, not once but twice!

so why was the driver of the minivan concerned about pulling over on an icy shoulder, well besides the risk he himself would have undertaken, he also happened to have his three young children (2, 3 and 6 years old) in the car.

After ramming the minivan, Rindal goes ahead and whips her gun out, handcuffs the man, arrests him in front of his kids, and impounds the damaged vehicle (1500$ damage). On top of that he gets 37 hours in jail and a 130$ ticket in the mail, even though the prosecutors didn’t end up charging him with a crime.

ok, so what happened to Sargent Carrie Rindal …. well she was made to appear before an internal review board and surprise, surprise, what do you know, the board agreed with her decisions to both ram the minivan and shove her gun in the guys face for trying to protect his family (in a related matter the board disproved of her butch dyke haircut).

any punishment for the cop? nope, merely a note in her police file that mentions the incident for future refrence.

the whole incident took less then a minute, but it will be a minute the family never forgets.

Fascist Cops brutalize 15 year old girl

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

So checking the news today I ran across this video, released after the pigs defense attorney attempted to have it prevented from being seen by the public. Since the judge decided to deny that request we can see with full clarity the way in which this instrument of state repression (the police) is used to violate and abuse citizens in their care. The video shows the absurdity of the assertion that the fifteen year old girl had actually assaulted the officer by kicking her shoes at him violently, as if having shoes kicked at you would be grounds for striking a 90lbs girl multiple times in the face, throwing her onto the hard cement floor, and then lifting her up by only her hair.

even more sickening is that the other officer, who pretty much idly stands by, is the assaulting officers trainee. When police have officers like this as trainers it is no wonder that police brutality has become so widespread throughout the country.

We all need to be vigilant against acts of police brutality and the constant violation of our rights by so called “officers of the law”.

Brandon Darby, remember this guys face, once a co-founder of the relief group Common Ground is confirmed as an informant for the FBI, where he is known to have supplied information which led to the arrest of RNC activists.

The Traitor and Traitor 2 Here is some recently released surface video footage of the traitor Darby.

Andrew Darst, known as "Andy Panda" is the final confirmed FBI infomrant, who besides providing information to the Feds also manages to find time to beat his wife (click image for link)

It is important to know that the police and federal government are utilizing these clandestine tactics to disrupt popular movements across the country, it is important that all informants and undercover officers are identified as soon as possible so we can avoid the type of repression witnessed in St. Paul.
